“The more expensive casket, the better the preservative qualities.”  There is no scientific evidence to support this claim.  All bodies will decompose over time.  Even if the body is frozen or kept in a complete vacuum, decomposition may take a lot longer, but it will continue despite scientists best efforts to halt the process.

 “A gasketed casket will preserve the body much longer than a non-gasketed casket.”  The gasket does help to seal the casket, but that seal lasts only a month or two.  Many cemeteries will remove the gasket before burying the casket, in order to permit the natural decay of the body and to prevent bodily gases from building to a dangerous level within the casket.  Gaskets cost very little to create and install, yet may be priced high at a funeral home.

 “Mahogany caskets withstand decomposition and insects.” All organic materials decay. Mahogany has a very fine and close grain, which somewhat protects it from humidity and the insects of the rainforests where it grows.  But no casket is going to last forever nor protect the body after a certain period of time.
